When he’s not busy forgetting history, President Trump is of course very interested in undoing the things his predecessor, Barack Obama, did. That mission apparently extends to the work of former First Lady Michelle Obama as well.
The president, who just weeks ago was crowing about his “tremendous respect for women,” has now reportedly put the kibosh on a program the Obamas started to promote education for girls in the developing world.
On Monday afternoon, CNN reported that Trump‘s administration would be putting an end to “Let Girls Learn,” a U.S.-led global “initiative to ensure adolescent girls get the education they deserve.” The initiative brought the Peace Corps, USAID and other governmental organizations together “to address the range of challenges preventing adolescent girls from attaining a quality education that empowers them to reach their full potential.”
While aspects of the program may live on in other forms, the partnership as it exists now, including its name, is dead, according to a letter sent by the Peace Corps director to staff.
That a new administration is making changes to the previous one’s programs isn’t that big of a surprise. But context is everything here: Trump has constantly claimed “nobody has more respect” for women — despite his own, well-documented boorish behavior.
I have tremendous respect for women and the many roles they serve that are vital to the fabric of our society and our economy.

The irony of the situation was not lost on critics of Trump’s decision, who threw the president’s words right back at him.
Ivanka Trump, who has repeatedly insisted that her father is an “advocate” for women, was not safe from criticism either.
The backlash harks back to Trump’s online celebration of Women’s History Month — while he was gearing up to back a healthcare bill that would have removed requirements that insurers cover maternity care and birth control. Shortly thereafter, he signed a law allowing states to defund Planned Parenthood, which provides reproductive care and cancer screenings to millions of women. Not to mention the pussy grabbing.
You know, typical feminist stuff.
